What to Do with an Extra Room
What to Do with an Extra Room

You just bought your home and you have designed the perfect layout for you and your family, except you notice that there’s an extra empty room. Whether you’re living alone or with a partner, deciding what to do with that room can be difficult. If you can’t come to an agreement with your spouse or have too many options that sound appealing, it can be overwhelming trying to decide. You could focus more on practicality and function with a home office or guest room, or splurge on something fun and exciting like a home theater. There are plenty of options to choose from, and if you are at a loss for what to do, we’re here to talk about some ideas you might want to consider.

1. Home Office

For those who work from home or have a hobby that they want to dedicate more time and space to, a home office might suit you the best. When you have a home office you’re more likely to be more productive because it helps with distractions. Having a separate home office also helps clear the lines between home and work since you’re not working in any of the main areas of your home or your bedroom. Even if you don’t work from home and just want a space to work on your hobbies, a home office can offer you more storage space for any crafts or projects you are working on. The storage space will allow you to clean up easily as well, because everything will have a place to go back into. If this sounds like the choice for you, you can start furnishing that empty room and view our selection of home office essentials here!

2. Guest Room

When you want your family to visit but don’t want them sleeping on the couch or have to pay for a hotel, use the extra room you have as a proper guest room. Having a guest room allows your family to stay for longer periods of time, meaning more memories with your loved ones while helping them save money. If you have a family member that is struggling, they will be able to use the guest room while they get back on their feet. Guest rooms do not have to just be for your family, your friends can benefit from them too. Imagine a friend of yours staying late one night, and they don’t feel like driving home. Whether they don’t want to drive because they are tired or drinking, you will have a place for them to stay during the night. Ready to make the choice and choose to make the extra room a guest room? Look at our wide selection of bedroom furniture here and start furnishing it today!

3. Home Theater Room

This option might seem like a bit of an extravagant choice, but if you have the budget and space, a home theater room can be an impressive addition to your home. You would be able to host movie marathons for your family and friends with a large TV and a good-quality sound system. Not only that, you will have comfort, convenience and the ability to watch any film you want and be completely uninterrupted. A home theater room doesn’t just have to be for movies either, you could use it to watch TV shows, sports games or even use it for gaming. You’ll be able to catch all the biggest game-changing plays by your favorite sports teams in 4K, or play the newest games on your console and enjoy the looks of high-definition graphics. Want more ambiance or a luxurious look? Add atmospheric lighting around the TV and speakers and feel completely immersed in your entertainment. To elevate the way you watch and play, add some comfortable seats and a stylish entertainment center by looking at our selection here!

What is Traditional Style?
What is Traditional Style?

When you begin to decorate your home, choosing a style that shows who you are and what you want to express can be harder than you expected. With a variety of styles to choose from, you might be looking for a style that creates a warm and inviting atmosphere as well as provides comfort. In that case, you are looking for traditionally styled rooms for inspiration. Traditional style is based on Europe in the 18th and 19th century, it applies a classic and familiar look that feels put-together while also not feeling like too much at the same time. If you are looking to fully embrace and create a traditional look in your home, here are the main key elements you need to learn about.

How to Create a Traditional Space

As you start to think about traditional style and what it contains, you might be thinking of a stuffy, outdated or even boring room. That is not what traditional style is, when you incorporate this style thoughtfully into your home it can feel elegant, understated and most importantly, timeless. In order to start designing your home and inputting traditional elements into your space, these are the key elements that you’ll want to use.

1. Jewel Tones, Neutrals & Natural Wood

The first step you’ll want to take before you even think about furniture and decor is to determine what color scheme you want. For traditional designs you’ll notice they have a main focus on neutral colors and natural wood tones, while the accent color is a jewel tone of some type, think sapphire blue, emerald green or even ruby red. Once you determine what colors you want to use, repeat the colors throughout the room, this helps you avoid having an unbalanced and disorganized look.

2. Traditional Furniture & Traditional Accents

Now that you have your chosen color scheme, begin to look for the furniture you want to have in your home. For more traditional looks, search for tufted pieces in sofas, chairs and even bed frames. You’ll also want to keep an eye out for wooden pieces that feature ornate and classic details in the wood, like different types of moldings and carvings. Any piece that features upholstery with classic patterns such as florals, stripes, plaids and paisley, just to name a few, can also enhance the traditional look in any space.

3. Focus on Symmetry

To make sure the look you are creating is cohesive, you’ll want to make sure you are incorporating symmetry in your design. However, to avoid the room having too much uniformity and have it feel like a showroom display, you’ll want to match your pieces thoughtfully and carefully. Too much symmetry can definitely be a bad thing, which is why it is so important to add new and different accents to the room.

How to Modernize Traditional Style

While traditional style evolves to keep up with modern trends already, you might think that those elements keep it too old-fashioned for your tastes. To have your space keep up with the times you’ll want to follow these tips on how to modernize the traditional look.

1. Balance Traditional & Modern Elements

As you start to furnish and decorate your home, adding your favorite vintage pieces that add a sense of history and keeping it fresh with new and modern accents and accessories will be sure to show the beautiful blend that modern-traditional style can be.

2. Add Clean-Lined Designs

The furniture and decor pieces that have a simple and minimalistic approach is a key element in modern design, and by adding it to your traditionally-styled home you can easily add a modern touch in any of the rooms. This allows you to create a sense of harmony and balance that will take your design to the next level.

3. Enhance Your Space with Natural Materials

Both traditional and modern styles involve the use of natural materials in their designs. A great way to incorporate natural elements into your home is by finding furniture that is made from either stone or wood and by adding greenery around the room with potted and hanging plants. These natural materials will add a sense of authenticity to the room and enhance the modern-traditional style.

Chests vs. Dressers: What's Best For You?
Chests vs. Dressers: What's Best For You?

When you begin furnishing and decorating your bedroom, it’s important to get the basics before you get anything else. That means you need a bed frame, mattress, sometimes a box spring, a nightstand to hold all of your bedside essentials and bedroom storage so that way you have a place to store your wardrobe. There aren’t many storage solutions that you can choose from, besides a closet your options are a chest of drawers and a dresser. Each one has their own pros and cons, but out of the two which one is the better choice for you?

Chest of Drawers

Chests are known for having a tall and narrow design, allowing it to fit into small spaces with ease. This makes them the perfect choice for those who have small bedrooms. These storage pieces are also amazing for those who have high ceilings, this is because their height creates visual balance. There are 4 different types of chests that you can choose from, depending on your needs. Your options are a standard chest, door chest, media chest and narrow chest.

  • Standard Chest: These have around 4-6 drawers and are standard chest size.
  • Door / Gentleman’s Chest: This variation has a tall cabinet that can either have a rod to hang up your formal wear or built-in shelves for more storage. Also known to be taller than standard chests.
  • Media Chest: This option is versatile, perfect for both the bedroom and the living room because of the open top shelf and the height makes it a perfect place to put the TV.
  • Narrow Chest: Taller and way more narrow than standard chests, these are perfect for storing small articles of clothing, undergarments and even jewelry.

However, while they are perfect for small spaces, if you have a large wardrobe that you have to store, chests are not the choice for you and you’ll want to look into getting a dresser instead.

Dressers

If a chest of drawers does not offer what you want or need, a dresser might be the better option for you. Dressers are known for having a lengthy and short design, having it take up more floor space but also offering more storage. The deeper drawer depths on dressers allow you to store more clothing in each drawer, unlike a chest which has more shallow drawers. They also have some options that can come with a matching mirror, making them more functional. You can either attach the mirror to the back of the dresser directly, or some have the option of hanging it on the wall, usually right above the dresser. With everything you know about both options and what they are known for, you can determine which one suits you best.

When choosing your bedroom storage solution, you have to think about the space you have available and how large or small your wardrobe is. If you don’t have a lot of floor space and have a relatively small wardrobe, a chest is your best choice. However, if you have more floor space to spare and a large wardrobe, a dresser is your best choice. Ready to start your search for a new chest or dresser? You can start looking online here!
