What is Color-Drenching?
What is Color-Drenching?

If you are looking for a new way to add more of a timeless and grand look to your home, color-drenching might be the look for you. Although it is not new in the UK, with the rise of color-drenching in the U.S. you might be wondering what it is or how it can change the look and feel of a room. This design technique can be used in smaller spaces, like a bathroom, or larger spaces, like a living room and can create a colorful transition from room to room. Color-drenching is able to manipulate the mood of a room, for help choosing a color that corresponds with how you want the room to feel you can read more about how colors affect mood here!

We know where it started, what it does, and where it can be used, but what is color-drenching? Color-drenching is a design technique where all the surfaces in a room are painted the same color. The walls, the ceiling, the trims, the doors, every single surface you can paint in your home is the exact same color, or you could use different shades of the same color for a less dramatic effect. This technique can even extend towards surfaces such as shelves, cabinets and floors. Don’t like the plain paint look? Use a patterned wallpaper for the same color-drenched effect.

Now, you know what color-drenching is but how can you successfully incorporate this technique into your home? The first step is simple: choose a color you love or a color that conveys the emotion you want people to feel when they step into the room. Some people prefer choosing the furniture first and then finding out what to paint the walls later! The next step is trying the color you chose out. Bring paint or wallpaper samples, put them on a section of your wall, push the furniture together and see meshes together. To add more visual interest to your color-drenched room you can use neutrals for balance, dramatic textures and patterns for contrast and shades of the color you chose for depth.

When all is said and done, there are a couple of tips and tricks to keep in mind when you’re thinking about using the color-drenching design technique. Avoid using this technique in open-concept spaces, it can make a room feel overwhelming and it can be difficult to know where to begin and where to stop. You’ll also want to avoid painting brick, stone or natural wood, this is because it takes a lot of work to strip in the future if you change your mind.

Color-drenching is one of the best ways to create a grand look in your home. It can add colorful transitions from room to room, manipulate the mood of a room to make you feel different emotions when you walk in, and adds a timeless appeal to your home. How to Choose the Perfect Color Scheme
How to Choose the Perfect Color Scheme

When it comes to decorating your home, it can feel like a daunting task, especially if you’re worried about your decor clashing with your furniture. That’s why it’s best to pick out your color scheme before you start! Colors have a huge impact on the rooms you are decorating. Lighter colors can make a room feel larger, while darker colors make a room feel smaller. Colors can also impact the way your emotions when you walk in a room. Some make you feel serene and peaceful, while others are high-energy and promote a feeling of happiness. When choosing a color scheme, here are some tips and tricks that you can use to make the process easier for yourself.

Start With a Base Color

The start of any good color palette, starts with the main color that you’ll have in your home. A good rule of thumb to keep in mind is the 60-30-10 rule. This means that 60% of your home should be your base color, usually on the walls, 30% should be the secondary colors, usually the color of upholstery and lastly, 10% should be your accent colors, perfect for the accessories in your home. Now that you know the rule, make sure to choose a color you absolutely love! Ignore the current trends and just choose a color that makes you happy.

Choose Your Secondary Colors

In your color palette your secondary colors should be colors that can highlight and complement your base color. Think about colors that are lighter or darker than your base, but not exactly the same color but lighter and darker variations. Add variety and mix cool and warm colors! If you have a room filled with only cool colors, it’ll feel cold and uninviting. Just like if you have a room of only warm colors it can feel overwhelming and outdated. Metallics and different wood colors can be a great way of adding depth to the color scheme.

Find Your Accent Colors

Your accent colors are colors that you can either use or not use, depending on how you feel about your design. If you want an extra pop of color that will draw eyes you’ll want to add your accent colors in the room. If you feel like there’s too much color and it’s too busy for your liking, keep them out. Now, when it comes to choosing your accent colors you’ll want to choose a complementary color to your base color. It doesn’t have to be exactly complementary but it should be on the opposite side of the color wheel.

This is what my color scheme and living room design was after following these tips! Now that you have your color scheme, here are some extra things to think about:

  • You should have a max of 7 colors, and a minimum of 5 in your color scheme to keep it from feeling too messy or too plain.
  • You can use this color scheme anywhere in your home and change it up to make your home cohesive and flow! For example, make the base color a secondary and a secondary color your base.
  • Some people find it helpful to pick out the furniture colors first before choosing the base color!
  • There are many different color schemes to choose from, a monochromatic color scheme can be eye-catching, just make sure to balance your main color with neutrals to keep it from feeling overpowering.

Whether you’re creating a color scheme for your new bedroom or your office space, just follow these tips and you’ll have the perfect color scheme that you love every time. How to Create a Gallery Wall
How to Create a Gallery Wall

If you’re looking for a new way to decorate those empty walls in your home, a gallery wall might be the way to go. Gallery walls are a great idea for those wanting to add visual interest, showcase your past adventures with photos or even add a way to incorporate your personality into your design. Whether you are a maximalist who needs to have your entire walls covered or just someone who wants to fill up the negative space in certain areas, learning how to create a gallery wall can be a useful tool when decorating your home.

1. Choose Your Layout

When you’re starting to create your gallery wall, you’ll first want to choose where you are going to put it and how you are going to arrange your pieces. There are many different layouts you can choose from, but the styles are ultimately the same. You can choose a symmetrical layout or an asymmetrical layout.

  • Symmetrical: This classic look creates a cohesive and uniform style, mainly used for showcasing similar photographs or artwork.
  • Asymmetrical: A casual and organic vibe with a more personal touch, perfect if you want to incorporate mixed media in your gallery wall.

After you choose how you are going to lay it out, you can place your artwork on the floor and see how the pieces look together before you hang it and see what the end result is going to look like.

2. Consider Your Spacing

Spacing is a big part that plays in creating a gallery wall, you have to make sure that it doesn’t seem too overcrowded or cluttered while also making sure it doesn’t have too much negative space. A good rule of them when planning is to keep around 3” around each piece at a minimum and 6” as the maximum. The end goal is to create balance with your layout.

3. Choose a Color Scheme or Subject

For a cohesive look, you can go for a certain color scheme or you can choose to focus on photographs or artwork that focus on a specific subject, like flowers and floral designs. If you want to follow a color scheme, you’ll have to look for pieces that have a similar tone or intensity for a curated look on your walls. However, you don’t have to follow a color scheme or a subject if you don’t want to! If you’re a “go with the flow” type of person you can just focus on what different art pieces or photographs make you happy.

4. Anchor Your Collection

To help make your gallery wall more eye-catching a good tip is to use a large photograph, artwork or mirror  to anchor your collection and then build the rest of the layout around it. If you want a large gallery wall, keep your large pieces off-center and towards the middle, a smaller gallery wall means you want your large pieces in the 4 outer corners. These different styles will guide your eyes around the gallery, creating a good flow.

5. Alternate Orientations

A way to add more visual interest to your gallery wall’s design is to alternate the orientations of the pieces. If your largest piece is vertical the next piece should be horizontal. The trick is to not have more than 2 pieces with the same orientation next to each other so that way you avoid having too many works of art with the same orientation, pairs are okay though. Too many pieces with the same orientation means that your gallery wall will be more stale.
