How Tall Should Your Mattress Be?

When you begin your search to find a mattress you will want to take every aspect of a mattress into consideration. You’ll most likely want to start with the size and price, to make sure the mattress fits your bed frame and stays on budget. Other folks might be more flexible on those parts and want to find the perfect mattress focusing on the comfort level or the mattress type itself. Although, have you ever considered why certain mattresses are different heights and what the benefits are? The height of your mattress can influence the amount of support it has, the weight and some bed frames are only good for certain heights. Whether you're buying a mattress online or in-person, it’s smart to look at the variety of heights and determine which one is best for you.

What Does The Height Affect?

The first question you will want to ask yourself when looking at the different heights is “Which height will work best for my bedframe?” and this is because you need to ensure that you can not only get into the bed easily but you also should check to make sure that your low-profile bedframe with a thin mattress will not make you feel like you’re sleeping on the floor. Next, you’ll want to think about how you sleep at night. Are you a stomach sleeper? A side sleeper? Different heights are better for different types of sleepers. Then, you’ll want to look at the price tag and check to make sure you’re staying on budget, the taller the mattress the steeper the price. Lastly, if you are not having the mattress delivered and set up for you, thinking about whether you can carry the mattress yourself is important. Taller mattresses mean more weight, how much can you carry? Once you have all of these questions answered, you can start looking at the different heights and choose which is best for you.

What Are The Different Heights?

1. Thin / Low-Profile Mattresses (Less than 8”)

A perfect choice if you’re looking at mattresses for daybeds, bunk beds or even trundles. This is because thin mattresses are not ever really used for multiple adults or adults in general, however they are perfect for children, since they do not need as much support in the early years. Although, some folks who are moving into a dorm or are light sleepers might want to consider this as an option.

2. Slim Mattresses (8” - 10”)

With slightly more support to work with, Slim mattresses are some of the most cost-effective options you will see. If you are someone who struggles with mobility or is a back sleeper or side sleeper, these mattresses are going to be the best options for you. They are mostly similar to thin mattresses since they work best for children’s beds, daybeds, bunk beds, except the slightly better support allows it to be a better option for dorms and a good option for guest beds.

3. Standard Mattresses (10” - 12”)

Great for folks who prefer to sleep on their side, stomach or back, standard mattresses are the most common and often have better support, comfort and durability. These types of mattresses work best for standard bed frames and are usually the best option if you are looking at mattresses for adults. Since this is the standard height, you’ll also find a lot more of a variety in the types and comfort level.

4. Deep / Tall-Profile Mattresses (12” - 14”)

More cushioning so you can get more comfort, deep mattresses are known for having plush comfort and durability. The height of these mattresses make it best for side sleepers and stomach sleepers who need the extra pressure relief. These mattresses are better suited for low-profile beds due to the height being a bit too high for standard bed frames, you would most likely have some trouble getting in and out of bed.

5. Extra Deep Mattresses (More than 14”)

With a better chance of being extremely plush, the extra deep mattresses feel plush while resisting sagging, however, they can only be used for low-profile bed frames and platform beds to make sure you do not have trouble getting in and out of bed. These heights can feel luxurious and are perfect for side sleepers and stomach sleepers, though definitely not inexpensive in the slightest. Yet, if plush comfort is more important to you, this might be an option worth looking at.
